“Tijdens een periode van droogte is inzicht in de toestand van het bodem-watersysteem cruciaal om maatregelen te treffen om schade als gevolg van droogte te beperken. In dit artikel laten we zien hoe met behulp van droogte-indices in combinatie met actuele meetge- gevens de mate van droogte in verschillende compartimenten van het watersysteem uniform kan worden bepaald. Zo kunnen zowel de actuele droogtetoestand als de ruimtelijke verschil- len tussen regio’s inzichtelijk worden gemaakt. “For a complete representation of a drought event, it is important to take the different types of drought, meteorological and hydrological, into account. Drought propagates through the hydrological cycle from meteorological to agricultural (soil moisture) to hydrological drought (groundwater and discharge). There are different methods to quantify and classify drought. In this paper we used standardized drought indices and the variable threshold level method to identify drought in precipitation, precipitation excess, soil moisture, and groundwater in the Pleistocene Uplands of The Netherlands. By combining up-to-date measurements and a uniform representation of the drought types, differences between regions can be shown. This information is provided in a web viewer, https://droogteportaal.nl/. Water managers and stakeholders can use the provided, uniformly determined, information of the drought indices to make decisions about adaptation measures to possibly mitigate drought impacts.”
