ArtDemo: Reduction of contamination risks at an artificial recharge demonstration site in Denmark and Sweden

Artikelen

The application of Managed Aquifer Recharge (MAR) raises many technical and scientific questions on the early warning, identification, monitoring, fate prediction and risk management of contaminants in the surface water to infiltrate. In this E-book, the results are presented of the EU-funded ArtDemo project, which aims at answering these water quality questions for basin recharge systems. The pilot plant Arrenæs near Kopenhagen (Denmark) and the ancient recharge system Dösebacka near Götenborg (Sweden) were the main sites to demonstrate methodologies for monitoring and risk management. Water quality aspects addressed are: main constituents, trace elements, pesticides, estrogens, progestogens, antibiotics, VOCs, Microcystine, faecal indiators and bacteriophages. The underlying research was carried out in the period 2002-2006. For various reasons the publication of the ArtDemo results has been delayed for about 11 years, although some parts appeared in 2006 in the proceedings of ISMAR-5 (Proc. 5th Intern. Symp. on Management of Aquifer Recharge, ISMAR-5, Berlin 11-16 June 2005, UNESCO IHP-VI, Series on Groundwater No. 13) and elsewhere. The ArtDemo results reflect, of course, the technological and scientific state-of-the-art of about one decade ago. Nevertheless the information and ideas are considered of high value and actual enough, worth this publication.
