KWRW -Waterwijs rapport
The delegated act supplementing Directive (EU) 2020/2184 mandates that drinking water companies must monitor microplastics in drinking water once microplastics are added to the monitoring list. In this project, the necessary tools were developed to meet the requirements outlined in the document. A sampling device was built and tested that enables sampling in accordance with the delegated act. This device can sample microplastics ranging from 10/20 to 500 µm in a water matrix (drinking water or similar quality).
For the identification of microplastics, a software tool was developed with a machine learning algorithm that uses infrared spectra. This software replaces the supplier’s software for the infrared spectrophotometer to improve accuracy. The software was tested on real samples from the Sijmons drinking water production site. The software was successfully utilized, and the results show that, on average, fewer than one microplastic particle per litre can be detected.
